In May 2005, Leon Gatewood discovered only one in eight Black boys in Anson County could read at grade level.
"Where there's such a gap, something has to change," Gatewood recognized.
Determined to make a difference, Gatewood founded HOLLA! to uplift educational outcomes for all children.

The Masai, one of Africa's mightiest tribes, begin each day by asking, "How are the children?" This greeting reflects their belief in prioritizing children's well-being.
This question inspired Leon Gatewood to reflect on our own communities. When we fail children in school, we often set them on paths to poverty, prison, or health struggles.
What if we began every conversation with "How are the children?" and took real steps to ensure all children are thriving?
While setting up sound for a Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast in Wadesboro, NC
High school principal Michael McLeod reveals: "Only 54% of my students are reading on grade level."
Later that day, speaker Glenda Manning shares the Masai tribe's tradition of asking "How are the children?"
